Substitute Requirements

Application
Persons wishing to substitute teach at West Houston Charter School shall make application directly to the school’s office.

Documentation
Approved substitutes shall have on file:
    1. Original application form (application form on website)
    2. Record of highest education attained, including high school diploma, GED certificate, or transcript for all college work, and/or Texas certificates
    3. Copy of picture identification and social security card taken from the originals

    4. (3) completed references (reference form on website)
    5. WHCS will be performing a criminal history background check

Qualifications
West Houston Charter School shall attempt to hire individuals preferably with the following qualifications:
   
    1. Minimum of 60 college hours
    2. Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
    3. Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
    4. Punctuality and dependability
    5. Flexibility in the job assignment

Not required but preferred:

    6. Teaching certificate
    7. Bachelor’s degree

Selection
Staff shall give first consideration to the most qualified teachers on the approved substitute list and shall make an effort to place substitutes in their filed of interest or the field in which they are best qualified.

Pay
The rates for substitute pay shall be set by the Board and recorded in Board minutes. $80 per day.

Performance Responsibilities
A substitute shall be subject to all duties of a regular classroom teacher.

Parent Notification
If West Houston Charter School assigns an inappropriately certified or uncertified teacher to the same classroom for more than 30 consecutive instructional days during the same year, it shall provide written notice of the assignment to the parents or guardians of students in that classroom.
The Administrator shall provide the notice not later than the 30th instructional day after the date of the assignment of the inappropriately certified or uncertified teacher. West Houston Charter School shall make a good-faith effort to ensure that the notice is provided in a bilingual form to any parent or guardian whose primary language is not English. West Houston Charter School shall retain a copy of the notice and make information relating to the teacher certification available to the public upon request.
